your heart

they say your heart is
about the size of a fist
but I don’t believe that’s true.
feel it under your hand,
beating, warm.

your heart is bigger than you can see,
it fills you up to reach your skin
your heart pours out like sunlight
to fill the room you’re in
beating, warm,
expanding down the hallway
your heart grows to occupy
this building of shattering glass
claiming the sidewalks below,
beating, warm,
side streets to subway
encompassing the freeway
larger than this wounded land,
beating, warm,
your heart is bigger than country
boundaries bleed between nations
it holds this planet inside
itself, streaming past Saturn,
past faraway stars and
galaxies beyond dreaming,
beating, warm,
you can’t see your heart from space
because your heart is the space
light streaming out
from this vast
immense infinite
luminous singularity –
beating, warm.

how much can it hold
how far can it go?
with your hand on your heart
be still, and know.
