coffee grounds
first,
cold feet on the floor
the heater hums
in morning’s quiet
the cat hears, she knows
let her in
time for breakfast, hit the snooze
hurry, don’t be late to
the daily sleepy ceremony:
fragrant beans, grinder’s buzz
water trickles, boils inside
coffee’s on
teeth brushed, hair brushed
channel talk and chatter
crack, crack, yellow blooms
plates clatter, glasses kiss
water rushes, spoons swish
pour another bitter cup
the daily news announces:
it’s too hot.
so give the view your gratitude
push open the sliding door
step upon this solid soil
spread your arms, hold the sky
then take the grounds and shells
to the compost bin
hurry
